On August 4th, Obesity Canada (OC) and the Canadian Association of Bariatric Physicians and Surgeons (CABPS) will release new Canadian Adult Obesity Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs).
Clinical Practice Guidelines are detailed knowledge bases that systematically assess scientific evidence and the clinical experience of expert healthcare professionals to guide practitioners on how best to manage specific diseases.
The new obesity CPGs are the result of more than two years’ work by 60+ Canadian experts, who reviewed more than 500,000 peer-reviewed papers published in scientific journals to identify the best evidence for a long list of topics related to obesity management. The CPGs are rooted in patient-centred care, with patients and providers working together to identify personal drivers of obesity, set realistic goals and maintain healthy behaviours over the long term.
A summary article of the 80 final recommendations on obesity management will appear in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) online August 4th. OC and CABPS will simultaneously post 19 in-depth chapters on topics ranging from weight bias to bariatric surgery, the obesity-mental health link, pharmacological treatment, medical nutrition therapy and more. Each chapter includes key messages for people living with obesity as well as for health professionals and policy makers.
The CMAJ summary article will appear in English and French; the 19 chapters will be published in English only on the OC website (www.obesitycanada.ca/guidelines), with key messages for healthcare professionals and people living with obesity also translated into French.

Developed by Obesity Canada and the Canadian Association of Bariatric Physicians and Surgeons, the new CPGs were authored by more than 60 Canadian health professionals, researchers and individuals living with obesity. A summary of the recommendations will be published online in the Canadian Medical Association Journal August 4th, and 19 in-depth chapters will be made available simultaneously on the Obesity Canada website.
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Have advanced understanding of the Canadian Adult Obesity Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs)
- Provide obesity chronic disease management in a planned, proactive manner
- Support patients to understand how their root causes, comorbidities and personal context are related to their obesity management
- List, review and select therapeutic approaches (behavioural, medical, surgical) to help patients develop personalized plans to manage their obesity as a chronic disease.
